Motor control ICs and starter kit simplify sensorless BLDC motor design
Motor control products from Renesas now include two system in package (SiP) motor drive ICs for brushless DC (BLDC) motor control designs. The RAJ306001 and RAJ306010 motor drive ICs are suitable for a range of cordless battery-powered applications such as power tools, drones, water pumps, vacuums, cleaning robots, and fans. Renesas has also produced a starter kit for the RAJ306010 motor drive IC.
The RAJ306001 and RAJ306010 motor drive ICs combine multiple functions into a SiP. They integrate an RL78/G1F microcontroller and pre-driver into a single 8.0 x 8.0mm QFN package, including a charge pump, linear regulators, current detection, programmable slew rate control and back electromotive force (BEMF) detect circuitry for sensor-less operation
Both ICs deliver improved low-speed or high-speed rotation and high torque control compared with competitive ICs, says Renesas, while minimising the amount of board space required reducing solution cost.
The integrated SiP can eliminate as many as 30 external components, says Renesas, to shrink the board area by up to 50 per cent and to lower control system costs. Integrated safety functions, including IEC 60730 safety standard support, can detect errors and halt the motor if an error occurs
Both ICs feature self-aligned dead time (SADT) to prevent the shoot-through and manage heat. They also offer adjustable pre-driver output current capacity – up to 500mA – to drive large-capacity MOSFETs, to contribute to heat dissipation. The ICs drive MOSFETs at the optimum switching timing to reduce FET switching margin times to approximately 1/10 the time compared with conventional systems. This also enables efficient motor drive control with reduced heat generation, adds Renesas.
Operating ranges are 6.0 to 30V (RAJ306001) and 6.0 to 42V (RAJ306010).
Renesas has also unveiled the Renesas Solution Starter Kit (RSSK) for developers working on a motor control solution using the RAJ306010 ICs. It has a complete evaluation environment that includes a development board, motor, and reference firmware, offering easy motor control debugging. The kit allows customers to immediately begin evaluating their motor control design, executing real-time analysis and tuning to accelerate development.
