Open edge software addresses time-critical IoT systems
Time-critical and resource-constrained applications at the IoT edge can be simplified using Edge XRT software, says IOTech. According to the company, the software platform simplifies the development of time-critical IoT systems at the Edge and also enables application portability and faster time to market for new IoT edge applications.
XRT runs on commodity hardware, independent of silicon provider and operating system (OS) and is flexible in deployment. It can be a native application, containerised and/or deployed into a virtualised environment.
Edge XRT targets IoT applications which require a small memory footprint (as low as 100kbyte), low latency (from less than 100 microseconds) and/or predictable real-time data processing. It is written entirely in C, making it portable and able to support legacy, brownfield systems based older hardware, OS and development environments.
It is designed for high performance edge computing in industrial control and real time signal processing applications across different vertical markets including factory automation, oil and gas, utilities, smart energy and renewables. It also enables integration between the real time edge control systems and higher level SCADA applications.
The small memory footprint and efficient use of computing resources, also makes Edge XRT suitable for microcontroller-based IoT applications, for example instrumentation and equipment monitoring, automobile engine management systems, medical devices, home automation and consumer electronics.
Edge XRT can be deployed independently or as a real-time extension to any general purpose edge platform, explains IOTech. For example, Edge XRT has been integrated with IOTech’s Edge Xpert, an industrial grade implementation of EdgeX Foundry, the open source edge platform.
