Optical encoder sensors are programmable to keep pace

Combining a FS210 transmissive incremental encoder and FS310 reflective incremental encoder sensors, the FlexSense technology is designed to optimise optical encoder applications. The one-size-fits-many optical array integrates several sub-systems on one SOC, says TT Electronics. The result is a shrinking footprint, shorter time to market and reduced manufacturing costs, says the company.

As low cost control electronics proliferate, demand for customised high end optical encoder sensors is also growing. “We saw an opportunity to address both developments in tandem,” said Walter Brooks, global product manager – optoelectronics, TT Electronics. He described FlexSense as a flexible solution that can be configured quickly to meet optical encoder design requirements including higher resolution, faster response, a smaller footprint and greater intelligence,” he said, adding that it can reduce complexity and increase manufacturing throughput – now and in the future.

The FlexSense sensor integrates auto-alignment capability, a closed-loop LED driver, on-chip diagnostics, and a 8x interpolator. The programmable array SoC provides a versatile device that can adapt to a multiple range of code-disk diameters and pulses per revolution, as well as several LEDs available in the market, including TT’s OP207CL encoder LED. If the encoder code-disk is altered later, FlexSense can be reprogrammed to meet changing requirements in medical and industrial applications. This extends the sensor’s value-add and negates the cost of purchasing a different sensor, pointed out the company.

TT Electronics provides engineered technologies for performance critical applications. TT says it solves electronics challenges for a sustainable world. It benefits from enduring megatrends in structurally high-growth markets including healthcare, aerospace, defence, electrification and automation.

TT invests in R&D to create designed-in products where reliability is mission critical. Products designed and manufactured include sensors, power management and connectivity solutions. TT has design and manufacturing facilities in the UK, North America, Sweden, and Asia.
