Optically isolated load-biased gate driver provides fast load turn-on speeds
Standard photovoltaic (PV) gate drivers simplify SSR-design by eliminating the need for auxiliary power supplies. Due to output currents in the µA-range, they get slower with larger gate charges of external MOSFETs, making it difficult to fulfil demanding fast turn-on application requirements.
Eliminating the need for an external power supply, the CPC1596 570V optically isolated load-biased MOSFET gate driver provides fast turn-on switch speed (typically 40 micro seconds) enabling designers to create a custom, higher power, optically isolated, DC-only or AC/DC solid state relay (SSR) with external MOSFETs.
Switching speed can be increased using the driver’s load biasing, on-board circuit. Load-biasing eliminates the need for an opto gate driver auxiliary power supply. An internal regulator circuit regulates the voltage drawn from the load supply (up to 570V) down to 12.2V for internal use. The design also includes an external storage capacitor which enables constant voltage control for properly driving the MOSFET.
The CPC1596 570V is suitable for industrial controls, automatic test equipment (ATE), HVAC controls, medical devices, building automation, IoT and other high-power electronics applications that require fast turn-on speeds, advised Littelfuse.

In addition to boosting external MOSFET start-up speed by using load-biasing, the CPC1596 eliminates the need for an opto-gate driver auxiliary power supply. It also supports optically isolated SSR-applications for both AC and DC and enables the use of higher power MOSFETs, reported Littelfuse. It can also be controlled from a logic port.
