OptiMOS 6 sets switching frequency standard, boasts Infineon

Reflecting the trend for higher efficiency and improved reliability in switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) and battery-powered applications, Infineon has introduced the OptiMOS 6 100V family. It is based on a new power MOSFET technology which is optimized for high switching frequency applications such as telecomms and solar, where losses are associated with charges (switching) and on-state resistance (conduction). It also has what is claimed to be best-in-class RDS(on) and a wider safe operating area (SOA), making it suitable for battery powered applications and battery management systems.

The OptiMOS 6 100V family of MOSFETs allows for easier thermal design and less paralleling, leading to excellent efficiency, improved power density, system cost reduction, and prolonged lifetime, says Infineon.

In telecomms in particular, the OptiMOS 6 achieves 18 per cent lower RDS(on) and more than 30 per cent improvement in figures of merit, i.e., (RDS(on) x Qg and Qgd), compared to the OptiMOS 5 family. In a 600W, (36 to 60V) to 12V ZVS buck-boost converter, the OptiMOS 6 in SuperSO8 package with 2.2 mOhm can achieve one per cent higher efficiency than OptiMOS 5 BSC027N10NS5 (2.7 mOhm) across the whole load range. This results in a 7W lower power loss due to improved charges and RDS(on), enabling up to 15 per cent higher power density.

According to Infineon, the technology allows for lower conduction and switching losses and minimises the necessity for paralleling parts.

In telecomms power systems, switching to the OptiMOS 6 100V  MOSFET technology could save the equivalent of the electricity consumption of 170 households.

The OptiMOS 6 100V is available now in SuperSO8 5 x 6mm and PQFN 3.3 x 3.3mm packages in a range of RDS(on) classes.
