PoE switches eliminate wiring in automation networks

Eliminating cable in complex automation networks reduces wiring effort, saving space, labour and material costs. This rationale has prompted Wago to introduce its Power over Ethernet (PoE) industrial switches.

Power supply and data transfer via Ethernet cable, PoE+ eliminates the separate power connection for devices connected to the switches via the IP network. Advantages are that wiring is significantly faster and they save space. Separate power supply units are not necessary, further reducing cost. Ring redundancy ensures reliable communication, even if a line breaks.

For smart networks for process control and automation, designers can used custom PoE+ switches with 30W per PoE+ port. The robust design suits demanding locations and there are variants with 24V power supply, which eliminates the need for an additional 48V power supply unit. Scaled functions include redundant power supply and alarm functions for high-availability, a particular benefit in process control.

For secure communications, the five- and eight-port switches provide 1.0Gbit data transfer and operate in the extended temperature range of -40 to +70 degree C. The switches also offer intelligent, energy-saving operation. ‘Efficient Ethernet’ continually adapts and optimises the performance based on the prevailing data volume. Targeting real-time Ethernet systems currently used within general automation technology, Wago’s switches meet the requirements of Profinet Conformance Class A (IEEE 802.1p).
