PoL DC/DC converters save space in networks, says Infineon
Single output buck regulators from Infineon Technologies are designed with an integrated inductor for space-efficient and simpler designs, said the company.
It has been introduced for contemporary server, communication, and network storage applications. The step-down DC/DC converter modules primarily address space and thermally constrained applications, telecomms and datacomms applications, servers and network storage.
The TDM3883 and TDM3885 IPOL DC/DC converters are fully integrated single-output buck converters, offering a continuous 3.0A / 4.0A load capability and line regulation over an input supply range of 4.5 to 14V.
The integrated inductor and capacitors reduce external components and allow easier designs with much higher power density, explained Infineon. The integration offers low parasitic parameters by minimising the PCB wiring trace needed. At the same time, the small package size, allows the modules to fit into restricted PCB space offering up to 80 per cent area saving, claimed the company.
Both modules feature a low supply current (10 microA) at shutdown resulting in longer battery life for portable applications. The tight reference voltage tolerance (0.5 V ±1.0 per cent) and low ripple enable them to provide accurate power delivery and contribute to system stability and reliability. They also employ an enhanced stability constant on time (COT) engine with ceramic capacitors without external compensation and a forced continuous conduction mode (FCCM) option. The modules have thermally-compensated internal over-current protection (OCP), enhanced light load efficiency with reduced switching frequency and diode emulation mode (DEM).
With light loads, they can enter a low quiescent current mode making them suitable for standby power supplies. Other features include internal soft start, enable input, pre-bias start up, thermal shut down, a power-good output, over-voltage protection and under voltage lock out.
The TDM3883 and TDM3885 integrated POL single output buck regulator modules are available in a 2.7 x 3.1 x 2.3mm 3 PG-LGA-15-1 package and a 3.1 x 3.8 x 2.3mm 3 PG-LGA-15-2, respectively.
