Radar target simulator tests 4D sensor systems with precise simulation

High resolution radar sensors that are capable of precisely and selectively capturing their environment while providing height, distance and speed information, are a key technology in the development of self-driving vehicles. In response to these anticipated needs, dSPACE has expanded its radar target simulators for testing automotive 4D sensors with DARTS 9040-GT which allows for the precise simulation of two radar targets with high resolution.

DARTS 9040-GT supports the development of radar systems that have to meet strict requirements on separation capability, making testing easier and more efficient in terms of effort and costs.

The dSPACE Automotive Radar Test System (DARTS) 9040-GT allows for the simulation of two targets with high precision and resolution by means of an instantaneous bandwidth that covers the entire 5GHz of the automotive E-band. Until now, two DARTS 9040-G had to be used in a test setup to complete this task.

The DARTS 9040-GT supports separation tests for radar targets that approach from different angles or for targets that are located at different distances but at the same angles. It is possible to switch between the two tests with a single click, without having to change the test setup. “Since the range separation tests can be performed with a single high-frequency front end, they can be implemented very cost-effectively,” explained Dr. Alexander Trapp, product manager, radar solutions at dSPACE.

The DARTS 9040-GT will be available for demos and evaluations starting in January 2023.

dSPACE provides simulation and validation software for developing networked, autonomous, and electrically powered vehicles. The company’s range of end-to-end solutions are used particularly by automotive manufacturers and their suppliers to test the software and hardware components in new vehicles long before a new model is allowed on the road.

As well as a partner in vehicle development, engineers access its expertise for aerospace and industrial automation.

dSPACE is headquartered in Paderborn, Germany, has three project centres in Germany, and serves customers through regional dSPACE companies in the USA, the UK, France, Japan, China, Croatia, and South Korea.
