Real-time clock modules maintain accuracy over industrial temperature range

Epson has released the RX8900 real-time clock for industrial applications. It has a supply voltage of 2.5 to 5.5V and is offered in a choice of small packages, measuring 3.2 x 2.5 x 1.0mm3 or 10.1 x 7.4 x 3.3mm3. The package includes an IC and crystal with a factory-calibrated digitally temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (DTXO).

It has a built in kHz crystal and low power operation of 0.7 microA back-up current.

Epson explains that the use of DTCXO technology compensates not only  the temperature dependency but also the initial tolerance and circuit variations encountered in many industrial applications. The RX8900 has a high accuracy of ±3.4 parts per million (ppm) over the industrial temperature range of -40 to +85 degree C. According to Epson, this high accuracy is essential for precise time keeping, as required by emeters, lighting, and other industrial or outdoor applications.

To keep the time counter running even at main power failure, the RX8900 can detect the loss of main power source and automatically switch to a back-up supply from a battery or supercapacitor with a supply voltage of 1.6 to 5.5V.

Epson Europe Electronics provides value added services for semiconductors, sensors, sensing systems and timing devices for a range of markets including industrial, automotive, medical and communications.
