Recom adds compact 40W DC/DC converters for railways

A series of board-mount DC/DC converters from Recom extend the company’s portfolio. The RPA40-FR series is a range of DC/DC converters for railway applications which are claimed to set a new standard for power density and cost-effectiveness with 40W output in an industry-standard 50.8 x 25.4 x 10.2mm (2.0 x 1.0 x 0.4 inch) board-mount through-pin package.

The regulated and isolated RPA40-FR series features a 36 to 160V input range (200V/1 sec) which includes rail nominals of 72, 96 and 110V with surges and dips. The series’ low noise, single and dual outputs available are 5.0, 5.1, 12, 15, 24, +/-12 and +/-15V with the single outputs’ trimmable minimum +/-10 per cent (15 and 24V models are trimmable to +20/-10 per cent). No minimum load is required.

The efficiency of the RPA40-FR series peaks at 90 per cent which, along with advanced thermal design, allows operation with natural convection to high temperatures without derating up to 105 degrees °C ambient with reduced load and/or airflow. Protection is included against over-temperature, input under-voltage, output over-current, and short circuits. A control pin is also provided to shut down the DC/DC converters into a low dissipation state.

The DC/DC converters hold safety certifications including UL / EN / IEC 62368-1, EN 45545-2 and EN 50155, with a reinforced isolation rating of 3kV AC/1 min. They also meet EMC specification EN 55032 class A without external components and class B can be met with a simple external filter network. Reliability is high with an MTBF of 1.25M hrs at 25 degrees C according to MIL-HDBK 217-F (GB). According to Recom, these make the rugged, encapsulated parts suitable for harsh rail environments as well as for general industrial use.

Matthew Dauterive, DC/DC product manager of Recom said that the company has “pushed power density boundaries even further with these 40W products for the rail market without compromising performance and flexibility”.

All parts include a three-year warranty. Samples and OEM pricing are available from Recom and all authorised distributors.

Recom manufactures a full range of standard and customised DC/DC and AC/DC converters in every power class from sub-1W to tens of kW, alongside switching regulators and LED drivers in a wide selection of formats.

The company headquarters is located in Gmunden, Austria, and includes a logistics research and development centre and laboratory wing. The company is supported by a worldwide distribution network.
