Rectangular connectors resist vibration and shock

Rectangular connectors in the EMM series rectangular connectors operate in harshest-environment conditions, says Nicomatic. They resist high vibration and shock and meet or exceed MIL 83513-G and MIL-DTL 55302G.

EMM Series connectors are designed to reduce space and weight in the extreme environments, including defence, space, motorsport, civil aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and robotics. The 1.27mm pitch EMM interconnects result in a 40 per cent reduction in space compared with the CMM series and a 20 per cent space saving compared with standard Micro D connectors, says Nicomatic. They have been used by one customer in a missile actuation system and by another in the TUM Hyperloop pod motherboard.

The module EMM series is available with a 1.27mm pitch in 04 to 60 pin configurations. The secure wiping length makes them suitable for board-to-board configuration and also for board-to-wire (from gauge 24 to gauge 30) configurations, with male and female through-hole and surface mount straight and right angle variants as well as cabled versions available. The 90 degree EMM series interconnects have integrated back protection, and contacts protected by a proprietary design. The hardware is interchangeable, with locking and guiding functions available on both male and female connectors to ensure no misalignment or mis-mating can occur, adds Nicomatic.

Manufactured in the company’s purpose-built facility in France, EMM series connectors have high performance glass fibre composite moulding. The copper alloy male pins and female pins featuring tulip technology which is a clip with a four-finger spring contact made with the outer in copper alloy and beryllium copper inner. Fixing hardware is passivated 300-series stainless steel. EMM interconnects can be mated and unmated up to 500 times.

The connectors are rated at 250V RMS at sea level and have a dielectric withstanding voltage of 750V RMS. At high altitude, dielectric withstanding voltage is 540V RMS at 30,000 feet and 465V RMS at over 100,000 feet.

For extreme environments, the EMM series connectors are qualified to withstand vibration, shock, extreme temperature cycling, fluid immersion, humidity and salt spray corrosion. For space applications, they are certified to meet the ASTM E595 (ECSS-Q-ST-70-02C) specification for thermal vacuum outgassing.
