Reference design for IO-Link brings intelligence to the edge

To support today’s factories which have to adjust and reconfigure equipment to maximise throughput and efficiency, the MAX22000 and MAX22515 chipset builds upon the benefits of Maxim Integrated’s IOLink and its two-way universal interface.

The IO-Link interface allows every IO-Link sensor, actuator or I/O expansion module to be interchangeable to a standard hardware interface. It also provides software-defined performance parameters and selectable analogue input or output performance modes.

Maxim has also introduced the MAXREFDES177# IO-Link reference design to demonstrate these software-selectable capabilities.

The MAX22000 is a software-configurable analogue I/O which provides up to more than half the power savings, and which is approximately half the size, of the closest competing alternatives in the market today, claims Maxim.

It has a 24-bit ADC analogue input mode and an 18-bit DAC analogue output mode, and operates over either a single two-wire interface or a four-wire resistance temperature detector (RTD) / thermocouple temperature measurement.

The MAX22515 is claimed to be the industry’s smallest ±1.2kV/500 Ohm surge-protected, single-channel IO-Link transceiver. The integrated transceiver has protection diodes, auxiliary digital input, I2C or pin control, integrated oscillator and selectable 3.3V or 5.0V LDO which help to provide high configurability and reduce SKU. It enables half the power dissipation due to low 2.2 or 2.65 Ohm (typical) C/Q driver on-resistance compared to its closest competitor, in a 2.5 x 2.0mm WLP package. It is able to reduce the solution size by up to 67 per cent compared to the closest competitor, says Maxim, and fits into small, space-constrained IO-Link sensors or actuators.

The software-configurable I/Os have the ability to adjust device parameters on-the-fly to provide new ways to dynamically optimise machine performance and reduce factory downtime.

The MAX22000 and MAX22515 are optimised for power savings and save space, with the MAX22515 providing the smallest IO-Link single channel footprint at 5mm² and the MAX22000’s footprint of 86mm², says Maxim.

The MAX22000 is available now from the Maxim Integrated website, as well as authorised distributors. The MAX22515AWP+ and MAX22515AWP+T are also available via the website and authorised distributors. The MAXREFDES177# reference design and the MAX22000EVKIT# evaluation kit are available from Maxim Integrated.
