Regenerative power supplies exploit eco-friendly design

Keysight introduces two models to the RP7900 series of power supplies. The 20kW and up to 2,000V models provide high power and voltage for battery and electronics testing in hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles (HEVs/EVs).

The bi-directional, regenerative DC power supplies provide integrated safety features that protect people and devices under test (DUT). The power supplies’ regenerative design enables the energy normally consumed to be returned to the grid cleanly, saving costs associated with energy consumption and cooling, explains Keysight.

The automotive industry is using larger batteries to extend the range of EVs and higher voltage electronics to reduce charging time. As the demand for high power grows, so does the need for high power test equipment, but high power applications in aerospace, defence and infrastructure, as well as automotive and energy, are complex in terms of site preparation necessities and safety requirements when transitioning from low power to high power.

Keysight’s RP7900 is a part of the company’s HEV/EV Power Converter Test Solutions which enable customers to deploy high-voltage, high-power solutions for this market. The regenerative power supplies combine the seamless source and load functionality into a compact 3U-high package. According to Keysight, they minimise high-power test costs by shrinking floor space usage, reducing heat dissipation and maintaining uptime.

The new 20kW and up to 2,000V power supplies offer two-quadrant, bi-directional sourcing and sinking for seamless, uninterrupted transitions between sourcing and sinking current without changing the power supply’s output characteristics or introducing any disruptive behaviour.

The autoranging output characteristic improves flexibility over rectangular, or traditional, output characteristic power supplies due to expanded power curve, says Keysight. It allows more voltage and current combinations in one power supply.

The power supplies are also characterised by fast output speed, sub-millisecond command-processing time (equal to or less than one millisecond).

Simultaneous voltage and current measurement capabilities deliver high accuracy and resolution, continues Keysight.
