Renesas delivers intelligent sensor solutions for IoT applications

Renesas Electronics is releasing the HS4XXX family and the ZSSC3281 IC, targeted at faster design cycles, improved accuracy, and reduced system cost.

The HS4XXX is a family of relative humidity and temperature sensors and the ZSSC3281 sensor signal conditioning (SSC) IC is for amplification, digitisation and sensor-specific correction of sensor signals.

The HS4XXX family of relative humidity and temperature sensors provides high accuracy, fast measurement response time and low power consumption in a small package size. This makes them suitable for applications ranging from portable devices to products designed for harsh environments.

Key features of the HS4XXX relative humidity and temperature sensors include low current consumption – 0.3 microA average for eight-bit resolution with a 3.3V supply and low sleep current of 0.010 microA.

The sensors measure 2.5 x 2.5 x 0.9mm DFN-style 8-LGA package and have a relative humidity sensing of ± 1.5 per cent RH and temperature sensor accuracy of ±0.2 degrees C typical.

The ZSSC3281 SSC delivers amplification, digitisation, and sensor-specific correction of sensor signals. It includes a two-channel analogue front end as well as an integrated Arm-based MCU with embedded mathematics for sensor signal processing. It targets high-end applications including industrial, medical and consumer sensing.

According to the company, the IC features the highest performance with flexible analogue front-end configurations and dual-speed mode for highest accuracy combined with fastest update rate. Two ADCs run in parallel with up to 24-bit resolution and it enables broad use for different sensor elements with multiple characteristics. It has a measurement scheduler, advanced interrupt and diagnostic functions and digital interfaces including I²C, SPI, and one wire interface (OWI). The current loop output is 4-20mA and OWI communication is via a current loop.

The sensor design is supported by Renesas’ system design platform that eases the prototyping of IoT systems. The Renesas Quick-Connect IoT system consists of standard boards and interfaces that enable designers to connect a wide range of sensors to MCU / MPU development boards.

The system also delivers core software building blocks that are portable between boards, which reduces coding requirements. Instead of writing and testing hundreds of lines of driver code, designers need only to graphically select their sensor and write a few lines of code.

According to a recent Zion Market Research study, the global IoT sensor market is estimated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 27.9 per cent, reaching an estimated $27.9bn by 2028.

“Sensing solutions are a critical element in IoT systems, and present numerous design challenges during system integration that can slow development and impact overall system performance,” said DK Singh, senior director of the Systems and Solutions team at Renesas.

Renesas’ portfolio includes sensor signal conditioners, biosensors, humidity and temperature sensors, light and proximity sensors, flow sensors, and position sensors.

Renesas will present live demonstrations of its new products and integrated sensor solutions at the Sensors Converge Exhibition and Trade Show (27 to 29 June) in San Jose, California on booth 323.

Renesas Electronics provides microcontrollers and complete semiconductor solutions. These combinations accelerate time to market for automotive, industrial, infrastructure and IoT applications, enabling billions of connected, intelligent devices that enhance the way people work and live.
