RFID labels prove a tonic for pharmaceuticals and medical devices
As a result of a strategic partnership between Schreiner MediPharm and PragmatIC, RFID labels will offer manufacturers of pharmaceutical products and medical devices a more extensive portfolio of cost-efficient smart labels.
The special feature of the RFID-Labels is a flexible electronics chip embedded in Schreiner MediPharm’s labels. Unlike conventional silicon chips, the PragmatIC ConnectIC chips are thin and flexible and can be embedded into a variety of substrates. They can be used for small containers with a very small radius of curvatures, such as vials and small syringes.
The label-integrated RFID technology enables secure identification, traceability and authentication of devices or pharmaceuticals. “To date conventional RFID/NFC solutions have mainly been adopted in high-value use cases. Due to the co-operation with PragmatIC, we are now able to offer attractively-priced, smart pharma labels for high-volume requirements and low-cost medicines,” said Dr. Thomas Schweizer, president of Schreiner MediPharm. Like all of Schreiner MediPharm’s products, the labels are customised for application to the respective primary containers, packaging or devices to enhance ease of use and safety.

PragmatIC specialises in low cost flexible electronics. Its technology platform delivers flexible integrated circuits (FlexICs) that are thinner than a human hair and can be easily embedded into everyday objects. PragmatIC says it is reinventing RFID and NFC to bring connectivity to mass market applications.
