Richardson RFPD offers GaN audio Class D eval boards from GaN Systems
Evaluation boards for Class D audio systems by GaN Systems are available from distributor Richardson RFPD, an Arrow Electronics company. The distributor supplies and offers full design support capabilities for the boards.
The new GS-EVB-AUD-xxx1-GS GaN-based evaluation board platform provides an excellent reference design for implementing a high-performance, low-cost audio system. The Class D amplifier and companion power supply designs are optimised for sound quality, thermal performance, size and cost.
According to GaN Systems, GaN E-HEMT (high electron mobility transistor) fast switching, low output capacitance (Coss), and zero reverse recovery charge (QRR) enable a new level of performance for Class D audio amplifiers.
Key features of the two-channel Class D amplifier include multi audio signal inputs,
bridge-tied load output, option to switch between open-loop and closed-loop designs with optimised DSP control of each configuration and high performance audio.
They operate at 200W per channel (eight Ohm) and 300W per channel (four Ohm). They also has a minimum 108dB signal noise ratio (SNR) and dynamic range and less than 0.01 per cent THD+N (eight Ω, 1W) and ±0.5dB frequency response (eight Ohm). They operate at 96 per cent efficiency and exhibit reduced thermals, adds Richardson RFPD.
The companion switch mode power supply (SMPS) is a complete audio LLC SMPS with universal AC line input and is designed for easy integration with a GaN amplifier. It has a common-mode AC filter and 400W continuous, 550W peak power output from a ±32V DC dual rail output. No heatsinking and no cooling is required and the high efficiency SMPS exhibits 40 per cent loss decrease. The design of the SMPS is EMI/EMC-friendly, adds Richardson RFPD.
