RS Components stocks Osram’s IR laser for face recognition

Biometric identification is a popular, convenient and secure way to protect devices from unauthorised use. The first product from the Bidos product family manufactured by Osram Opto Semiconductors is now available from distributor, RS Components.

The Bidos PLPVQ940A provides a compact, homogeneous ‘flood illumination’ source for facial recognition on mobile devices.

The Osram Bidos PLPVQ940A illuminates the face evenly, enabling the system to capture high-quality images for reliable identification. The use of infra red light means that the captured image is not subject to distortion due to ambient lighting, says RS.

A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is a light source with a monolithic laser resonator that radiates light vertically to the surface of the semiconductor device, providing coherent light with directed emission. VCSELs combine the high power density, homogeneous illumination and simple packaging of a conventional infra red emitting diode (IRED) with the narrow spectral width and speed of a laser. The beam divergence is narrower and it can be easily fitted into devices. Importantly, wavelength sensitivity to temperature changes is less than for an edge emitting laser (EEL) diode. Coupling efficiency to optical fibres is high, reports RS.

The PLPVQ940A has a wavelength of 940nm, efficiency up to 27 per cent and an output power of 300mW (typical peak outpower of 600mW).

It is packaged as a 1.9 x 2.20 x 0.85mm surface mount device and provides illumination over a 65 x 78 degree angle spread.

The Osram Bidos PLPVQ940A is available now from RS in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.
