Rutronik UK offers low power IMU from Bosch

Increased system battery life is assured with the Bosch smart BMI270 inertial measurement unit (IMU). It is intended for wearable and hearable applications and is available from Rutronik UK.

The BMI270 is the latest member of the BMI260 family of IMUs. It includes intuitive gesture, context and activity recognition with an integrated plug-and-play step counter. The IMU handles these functions independently of the main system processor to significantly extend system battery life. The gesture and activity-recognition features run in the low power domain, with current consumption of just 30 microA. This reduces power consumption and enables extended battery charging intervals, explains Rutronik UK.

The BMI270 measures only 2.5 x 3.0 x 0.8 mm3 and is pin-to-pin compatible with the BMI160 and BMI260. The IMU is suitable for wearable devices, such as smart clothes, smart shoes, smart glasses, wrist and anklebands as well as hearables.

The BM1270 is enabled by Bosch’s MEMS process technology with an improved accelerometer performance. According to Rutronik UK, the IMU saves OEMs time and costs during testing and manufacturing.

The BMI270 is available in two application-specific versions, A and C. The A version detects wrist gestures (flick in/out, pivot up/push, arm up/down, and jiggle) for intuitive control of e.g. smart watches and is designed for Wear OS by Google. The C version has advanced features for recognising context / activity change (standing, walking or being in a vehicle).

Rutronik UK operates as an independent company with a team of qualified UK employees with a broad experience of the electronics industry. Parent company Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente is a broadline distributor for semiconductors, passive and electromechanical components in addition to storage technologies, displays and boards and wireless products for automotive, medical, industrial, home appliance, energy and lighting. Services are also offered for product development and design, as well as individual logistics and supply chain management.
