SBC from Advantech exploits low power 8th Gen Intel Core processors

Based on the low power 8th Gen Intel Core SoC, the latest 3.5-inch single board computer (SBC) from Advantech, the MIO-5373 is compact with I/O functionality, CANBus and a wide power input.

It measures 146 x 102mm and is suitable for image processing in medical equipment, automation control systems and the heavy loading of content in outdoor kiosks.

The 8th Gen Intel Core low power SoC (codenamed Whiskey Lake-U) doubles the computing cores to quad and provides up to 40 per cent multi-threaded computing performance over previous generation processors at a TDP of just 15W. Featuring a built-in Gen9LP graphics engine, MIO-5373 supports three simultaneous displays through LVDS/eDP, HDMI, and DisplayPort interfaces up to 4K resolution, as well as H.265/HEVC, H.264/AVC, MPEG2 hardware decode/encode.

The MIO-5373 supports dual channel DDR4 memory up to 32Gbyte (64Gbyte DDR4 memory is supported with selected SO-DIMM modules). The M.2 M-Key 2280 for NVMe supports high-speed PCIe x4 SSDs, providing high memory and mass storage data rates, says Advantech.

MIO-5373’s built-in iManager 3.0 is based on Advantech’s EIO-201 embedded board management controller, which integrates power sequence control for higher reliability and generic functions including general purpose I/O, hardware monitoring, smart fan control and watchdog timer. It also has domain-focused features like high-speed RS-232/422/485 up to 1Mbits per second, I2C (100kbit / 400kbit / 1Mbit) and CANBus. iManager provides I/O functionality with drivers and software application programming interfaces (APIs) on both the Windows and Linux operating systems for software development.

Expansion for the MIO-5373 SBC includes a variety of function cards, including M.2 E-Key for WiFi+BT or AI acceleration card, M.2 B-Key for 3G/LTE modules or SATA SSD’s  (optional with M-key for high-speed NVMe/PCIex4 SSDs).

Advantech’s MIOe extension interface provides four PCIe USB / LPC / SMBus slots for vertically-focused or customised expansion. The MIOe-260 I/O module provides an additional two GbE, eight UART, four USB, two isolated CANBus, one miniPCIe socket and one M.2 B-key socket. The extension interface, with MIO-5373 and MIOe-260, enables factory automation processes for automated guided vehicles (AGVs), CNC machines, or medical equipment I/O requirements.

The MIO-5373 has a 12 to 24V DC power input and models that can operate at -40 to +85 degrees C for use in extreme outdoor conditions.

Advantech says its WISE-PaaS/DeviceOn IoT device operations and management software supports users integrating, visualising, operating and managing industrial IoT devices through public or private clouds.
