Seven thermistor protectors offer choice to meet specific application requirements

Seven NTC thermistors make up the POWrTherm series by Bourns. They have a high inrush current limiter and a wide range of resistances, in addition to multiple board disc diameter options  which enable customers to meet specific application and market needs, said the company.

The POWrTherm NTC thermistor range is designed to deliver enhanced and efficient high inrush current limiting capabilities. It is made up of seven models – the BN-LG05Y, BN-LG08Y, BN-LG10Y, BN-LG13Y, BN-LG15Y, BN-LG20Y and BN-LG25Y.

The POWrTherm NTC thermistors’ are based on various metal oxides forming the polycrystalline NTC thermistor bodies which suppress high inrush currents. The seven POWrTherm models offer equivalent capacitance up to 1500μF at 240V AC and a maximum current up to 15A. All are housed in radial leaded through-hole packages and are UL and / or TÜV recognised depending on the specific model.

They are available in different disc sizes to meet various market segment requirements from consumer to industrial, for applications such as switched mode power supplies (SMPS), DC motors, amplifiers and transformers.

The thermistors represent a different and efficient technology approach to suppress inrush current, said Bourns. They use the high initial resistance of negative temperature co-efficient characteristics to effectively control and minimise unwanted inrush current, said the company. This mitigates the potentially harmful effects of excessive current at start up and during regular operation, resistance of the thermistors “significantly decreases”, allowing for improved efficiency across a wide range of applications As power demands continue to grow in modern end products, achieving enhanced efficiency has become increasingly critical, added Bourns.

All seven POWrTherm NTC thermistor series protectors are available now and are RoHS-compliant and halogen-free.

Bourns manufactures and supplies position and speed sensors, circuit protection solutions, magnetic components, microelectronic modules, panel controls and resistive products. The company is headquartered in Riverside, California, USA and serves a range of markets, including automotive, industrial, consumer, communications, medical (low/medium risk) and audio.
