SiC gate driver increases system uptime

Overall system energy loss can be reduced by 30 per cent and system uptime can realise up to three times higher with up to 3x higher common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) performance if designers implement the MAX22701E isolated gate driver in switch mode power supplies, says Maxim Integrated Products.

The MAX22701E is suitable for use in switch mode power supplies in industrial comms systems for solar power inverters, motor drives, electric cars, energy storage systems, uninterrupted power supplies, data farms and high-power/high-efficiency power supplies.

Maxim says designers can improve power supply efficiency by up to four percentage points over competitive solutions, reducing power loss and the resulting carbon footprint by 30 per cent.

Many switch-mode power supply applications are adopting wide-bandgap silicon carbide (SiC) transistors to improve power efficiency and transistor reliability. However, the high switching frequency incurs transients that generate noise, which either disrupts operations or requires extensive mitigation. The MAX22701E offers the industry’s highest common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) of 300kV/µs (typical), claims Maxim. CMTI is up to three times higher than the closest competitor, which results in increased system uptime, the company continued. It also boasts best-in-class driver propagation specs, of 35ns typical, which is a two times lower propagation delay than the closest competitor, while propagation delay matching between the high-side and low-side gate drivers of 5ns maximum which is five times lower than the closest competitor, helps to reduce the transistor’s dead time, says Maxim. Power efficiency is improved by up to four percentage points. In the 90 per cent efficiency range, every percentage point in efficiency results in about a 10 per cent improvement in power loss.

The MAX22701E is available in an eight-pin narrow body SOIC package, which measures 3.90 x 4.90mm and operates at the extended temperature range of -40 to +125 degree C.

The MAX22701E is available now. Maxim also offers the MAX22701EVKIT# evaluation kit.
