Smart load switch protects for USB Type-C applications

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) introduces a Type-C Power Delivery-compliant load switch with up to 28V over-voltage protection.

The AOZ1353 is a current-limited load switch with reverse current blocking capability. It is designed for use in applications where internal circuitry requires protection from exposure to high voltages. The switch offers low RDS (ON) (40-mOhm) in a thermally enhanced 3.0 x 3.0mm DFN package. The compact size and protection make it suitable for use in notebooks, ultrabooks, desktops, monitors, dockings/dongles, and Thunderbolt/USB Type-C PD applications, adds AOS.

The AOZ1353 operates from voltages between 3.4 to 5.5V from V IN and V OUT is rated at 28V absolute maximum. The internal current limiting circuit protects the supply from large load currents. The back-to-back switch configuration blocks any leakage between V IN and V OUT pins when the device is disabled. This is also the case when the device is enabled, but V OUT is greater than V IN. The AOZ1353 is programmable with protection features that include soft start, short-circuit protection, thermal protection, over-current and over-voltage protection.

Quiescent current is just 80-microA and shutdown current is one microA , compared with up to 1500A and seven microA of competing devices available today, says AOS.

“As the USB Type-C PD adoption, with its higher power and greater flexibility, continues to rise in popularity in notebooks, ultrabooks, desktops, and other connected devices, says Mehdy Khotan, power IC marketing director at AOS. “Designers are looking for solutions that offer the necessary protections for the system and its battery against exposure to higher voltages and currents. The combination of  low quiescent current, low RDS(ON), robust ESD and protection features . . . making [AOZ1353] the ideal power source switch for USB Type-C PD applications.”

The AOZ1353 is immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12 weeks.

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor is a designer, developer and global supplier of a broad range of power semiconductors, including power MOSFETs, IGBT, IPM and power IC products. AOS has developed intellectual property (IP) to address the increasingly complex power requirements of advanced electronics. AOS differentiates itself by integrating its discrete and IC semiconductor process technology, product design, and advanced packaging expertise to develop high performance power management. The company’s portfolio targets high-volume applications, including portable computers, flat panel TVs, LED lighting, smart phones, battery packs, consumer and industrial motor controls and power supplies for TVs, computers, servers and telecommunications equipment.
