Smart Modular demonstrates Gen-Z memory module at Flash Memory Summit

The Gen-Z Consortium is made up of leading computer industry companies dedicated to creating and commercialising a new data access technology. Smart Modular is a consortium contributing member and has developed and demonstrated multiple generations of Gen-Z memory and storage solutions. This week, it unveils the latest three inch 256Gbyte DDR4 ZMM which supports multiple access semantics, byte and block addressable DRAM access, in-band configuration and access key or region key memory isolation opcodes.

The three inch form factor follows the industry-standard enterprise and data centre SSD three inch form factor from SNIA (4C SFF-TA-1008/9).

The 256Gbyte ZMM supports 30Gbyte per second of data bandwidth with 400 nanoseconds deterministic access latency running in Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Dell Gen-Z enabled rack servers. The Gen-Z scalable computing interconnect protocol provides a simplified interface based on memory semantics and is designed to handle advance workloads, enabling datacentric computing with scalable memory pools and resources for real-time analytics and in-memory applications. The Gen-Z interconnect standard was developed to enable new architectures for high levels of performance (high-bandwidth, low-latency), software efficiency, power optimisations, and industry agility.

It uses a Gen-Z DRAM memory controller ASSP developed by IntelliProp; the two companies have worked closely together to integrate the Gen-Z memory controller ASSPs into the Gen-Z memory modules.

Smart’s DDR4 256Gbyte ZMM uses a high density DDR4 32Gbit 3DS four-high DRAMs provided by Samsung.

Smart Modular Technologies specialises in memory modules, solid state  storage products and hybrid devices and are available in standard, custom and ruggedised, high performance, high capacity applications. Its broad customer base includes OEMs in computing, networking, communications, storage, mobile, military, aerospace and industrial markets. The company provides customer-specific design capabilities, technical support and value-added testing services.

Smart Modular has developed a comprehensive product line of DRAM, flash and hybrid memory and storage technologies across various form factors.
