SOSA backplanes support C5ISR and electronic warfare

Two 3U backplanes from Elma Electronic are aligned to Snapshot 3 of the Sensor Open Standards Architecture (SOSA) standard. The six- and eight-slot backplanes are available populated with or without VITA 67.3 connectors for timing and RF connectivity. They provide the foundation for complex, high speed signal processing systems, says Elma.

“Designers can develop systems aligned to SOSA for high-performance mission-critical applications requiring lower lifecycle costs and rapid technology insertion,” explained Ram Rajan, Elma Electronic’s senior vice president of engineering. “We see them applied to a number of applications including mission, weapons and navigation control, threat detection, surveillance and target tracking and display as well as sensor-based systems and process and environmental monitoring.”

The backplanes are suitable for precision network timing and include slot profiles for SBCs, switches and radial clocks. All data paths support high speed signals.

The backplanes can be configured or customised to meet specific system needs. The extensible, modular design enables a wide range of slot counts and connection configurations.

Elma’s products aligned to the SOSA technical standard strive to follow the defence industry’s hardware and software convergence initiatives per the DoD’s convergence initiative as laid out in the Modular Opens Systems Approach (MOSA) mandate.

Elma Electronic is a global manufacturer of commercial, industrial and rugged electronic products for embedded systems and application-ready platforms, from components, embedded boards, backplanes, chassis and enclosures, power supplies, to fully integrated subsystems.

Elma also offers standard and custom cabinets and enclosures as well as precision components such as rotary switches/encoders, LEDs, front panels and small cases.

The company leverages proven technology based on VITA, PICMG and other standards-based architectures (i.e. OpenVPX, SOSA, VME, CompactPCI Serial, COM Express and PCIe/104). Elma is also actively engaged in designing solutions for applications requiring smaller footprints.

Elma Electronic manages entire projects from initial system architecture to specification, design, manufacturing and test through its worldwide production facilities and sales offices. The company serves the mil/aero, industrial, research, telecomms, medical and commercial markets and is certified to ISO 9001 and AS 9100.
