Starter kit simplifies COM Express module integration

Claiming to simplify the development of compact, high-end embedded systems, the MSC C6-SK-CFLH starter kit is available from Avnet Integrated. It is designed for MSC’s Type 6 COM Express MSC C6B-CFLH modules.

The kit enables the user to operate and test the computer on modules (COMs) on a proven platform that is ready to run, explains the company. It supports the user in the early phase of the application development sometimes long before an application specific carrier solution becomes available. This can significantly shorten development times and help to discover and solve design hurdles in an early design stage.

The MSC C6B-CFLH product family is based on the latest 8th generation Intel Core processors (codenamed ‘Coffee Lake’).

The MSC C6-SK-CFLH starter kit contains a baseboard in Mini-ITX format, memory modules (SO-DIMM), a heatsink with a fan and a suitable power supply. The universal carrier board has a COM Express base for Type 6 modules (compact or basic format) and features a range of common interfaces such as PCIe, SATA, USB 3.0 and 2.0, GbE LAN, LPC, UART, general purpose I/O and HD audio. Graphics output is via DisplayPort, embedded DisplayPort (eDP) and LVDS. The carrier board has a PCI Express Mini Card socket for functional extensions as well as an SD card slot.

The Type 6 COM Express MSC C6B-CFLH module family introduces six-core processors and delivers considerably higher computing and graphics performance at a similar power dissipation level as the previous 7th generation processor. The MSC C6B-CFLH modules have Intel Core-i7, Core-i5, Core-i3 and Xeon processors. The basic form factor is typically 125 x 95mm and have a power consumption between 35 and 55W. Typical areas of use are automation, image processing, telecommunications, medical and point of sale (PoS)/point of information (PoI).

The starter kit and the COM Express modules are developed and manufactured in Germany by MSC.
