Switching regulator series by Recom now includes 12V option
The R-78E series of switching regulators by Recom now includes a 12V option which is compatible with TO-220 linear regulators.
Recom’s 78-series are high efficiency switching regulators modules designed to replace the discrete TO-220 packaged linear regulators. The R-78 series has expanded to include its R-78E economy version for cost-sensitive applications.
The R-78E series are reliable and affordable switching regulators with efficiency as high as 91 per cent. The existing 3.3V and 5V models are now joined by the newly released models with 12V outputs. They require no additional heat sinks for their rated output current of 1A continuous and 2A peak up to 60 degrees C ambient, while supplying 0.6A at 85 degrees C. Input range is up to 28V for all parts.
The R-78E series has around 30 per cent lower losses than competing parts, Recom claims, for cooler running and high reliability. A ‘pulse skipping’ mode maintains high efficiency down to light loads. The parts are also claimed to have much lower conducted and radiated noise than other products on the market. They require just a small LC input filter for compliance with EN 55032 Class A or B emissions limits.
The overall dimensions of the R-78E series parts are 11.6 x 8.5 x 10.4mm.
Comprehensive protection includes cycle by cycle current limiting, short circuit, output over-voltage limiting and automatic soft-start to reduce inrush current.
The wide input voltage range of these parts makes them ideal for cost-conscious 24V industrial bus and 12V battery applications. The regulators’ high peak output current capability also makes them suitable for powering relays, sensors, IoT radios and audio equipment.
