Tactaxis gives robots a sense of touch

A prototype, fully integrated, 3D magnetic force, sensor which improves a robot’s ability to interact with fragile objects has been unveiled by Melexis. Tactaxis is a fully integrated tactile sensor that a provides the 3D force vector acting on its surface. This improves robots’ hands and grippers, making delicate operations, such as fruit picking, possible, said Melexis, which announced the technology in a functioning prototype.

The prototype features multiple 3D magnetometer pixels, using Melexis’ Triaxis technology. The sensor and a magnet embedded into an elastomer material create a soft contact interface, mimicking human skin. According to Melexis, this combination offers a high sensitivity so that detection of even small amounts of force will generate a response. The achieved force resolution is 2.7mN, which is enough to distinguish weight change of a fraction of one gram (approximately 0.3g).

The compact Tactaxis prototype has dimensions of 5.0 x 5.0 x 5.0mm, suitable for confined spaces.

The sensor is claimed to be immune to magnetic stray fields, using a gradiometric approach  to prevent potential measurement errors. It is however robust enough to cope with harsh conditions and temperature variations. Unlike optically-based tactile sensors, Tactaxis is completely integrated and it will be possible to produce high volumes of factory-calibrated sensors. This semiconductor process results in major cost and reliability benefits, added Melexis.

Melexis designs, develops and delivers micro-electronic products, offering mixed-signal semiconductor sensor and actuator components to address the challenges of integrating sensing, driving and communication into next-generation products and systems that improve safety, raise efficiency, support sustainability and enhance comfort.

Melexis specialises in automotive semiconductor sensors. Today, on average, every new car produced worldwide contains 18 Melexis chips, reported the company. Melexis has used its core experience to expand its portfolio of sensors and driver ICs. Now its sensors also meet the needs of smart appliances, home automation, industrial and medical applications. The portfolio includes magnetic sensors, MEMS sensors (pressure, TPMS, infrared), sensor interface ICs, optoelectronic single point and linear array sensors and time of flight (ToF) models.

The company’s driver IC range incorporates advanced DC and BLDC motor controllers, LED drivers and FET pre-driver ICs. The company is headquartered in Belgium.
