TDK extends Epcos ERU SMT power inductor series with high current chokes

Compact flat wire, surface mount, high current chokes have been released by TDK as part of its Epcos ERU SMT power inductors. The ERU16 choke series is comprised of 10 types of inductors.

The B82559B A016 series replaces the B82559A A016 series. The B82559B A016 extends the inductance range of the B82559A A016 from 1.0 microH to 30 microH, and saturation currents have increased from 10.3A DC to 40.4A DC at 25 degrees C.

The power inductors have a footprint of 17.3 x 16.5mm, which means they take up 12 per cent less space on the PCB than the B82559A A016. The inductors have a low insertion height, which varies depending on the type: namely 7.55mm (1.0 microH model) to 11.1mm (30 microH model). The low-profile design is based on a flat rectangular helical winding technology, which also results in lower losses, adds TDK.

The DC resistances are between one and 15.4mOhm. The series of high current chokes is designed for operating temperatures between -40 and +150 degrees C. Its additional third soldering pad results in high mechanical stability on the PCB. The components can be used as output and storage chokes in a variety of power supply topologies including point of load (PoL) converters, DC/DC converters, high current switch mode power supplies and inverters for photovoltaics systems in hybrid and electric vehicles. The components are RoHS-compatible and qualified to AEC-Q200.

TDK is based in Tokyo, Japan. It was established in 1935 to commercialise ferrite, a key material in electronic and magnetic products. The company’s portfolio features passive components such as ceramic, aluminium electrolytic and film capacitors, as well as magnetics, high-frequency, and piezo and protection devices. The product spectrum also includes sensors and sensor systems such as temperature and pressure, magnetic, and MEMS sensors. TDK also provides power supplies and energy devices and magnetic heads.

Its products are marketed under the brands TDK, Epcos, InvenSense, Micronas, Tronics and TDK-Lambda. TDK focuses on demanding markets in automotive, industrial and consumer electronics, and information and communication technology. The company has a network of design and manufacturing locations and sales offices in Asia, Europe, and in North and South America.
