Temperature sensors in WLCSP integrate into wearable designs

Temperature sensors from ams are available in a tiny 1.5mm2 wafer level chip scale package (WLCSP) and can be easily integrated into existing as well as new designs, says the company.

The AS621x-generation of temperature sensors can be used in a range of products – including consumer electronic devices, health-related monitoring systems and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. It can be used in applications ranging from industrial process control solutions, IoT applications such as cold-chain monitoring, medical data acquisition through to battery-powered mobile and wearable devices.

ams claims that prototyping and design verification is simple due to the family’s industry-standard serial interface with eight I²C addresses and a factory-calibrated sensor. “We are making thermal management easy for our customers as the family’s ultra-low power consumption – in addition to its tiny size – enables a tight thermal control,” says Michael Leitner, vice president and general manager for the business line Medical + Specialty Sensors at ams.

There are three versions of the AS621x temperature sensors: ±0.2 degrees C for the AS621, ±0.4 degrees C for the AS6214 and ±0.8 degrees C for the AS6218. The sensors help customers to integrate the temperature sensor into a system, with a decreased supply voltage range – down to 1.71V – and by increasing the I2C addresses to eight. Customers now have the added flexibility to monitor up to eight hot spots in a system.

The AS621x is a complete digital temperature system, which has been factory-calibrated to an accuracy up to ±0.2 degrees C. As a result, customers only need to solder the sensor solution onto the PCB to enjoy highest accuracy with no further calibration required, says ams. For greater sensitivity to temperature change, the resolution of the temperature value output has also increased to 16-bit.

The AS621x temperature sensors have the same small form factor as the preceding generation (AS620x), i.e. 1.5 x 1mm (in WLCSP) and what is claimed to be an industry-leading low power consumption of a typical current of 6 microA at a measurement rate of four samples per second.

The AS621x temperature sensor family is now available in production volumes.  An evaluation board is also available.
