Two-electrode GDT family has “very high” current ratings for surge protection

Designed to satisfy IEC and UL international lightning protection standards, a family of high energy, two-electrode gas discharge tubes (GDTs) are suitable for surge protection devices, said Bourns.

The GDT212E, GDT216E, GDT220E and GDT225E GDTs are designed to provide protection for AC powerlines and other demanding applications that are subject to high current surges. These high energy GDTs meet IEC lightning protection zone classification, UL1449 Type 5, and IEC 61643-311 standards, for deployment and installation in surge protection devices.

The GDT family offers a high surge capability at 60kA maximum rated on an 8/20 microseconds waveform in a small footprint and low profile package. They provide the surge protection performance necessary to meet AC power line application requirements while delivering a volume and space-saving solution for these high density, space-constrained designs.

The models in the series are available in a broad range of DC breakdown voltage options (150 to 1000V) making them suitable for virtually any voltage configuration in low voltage networks, said Bourns. For versatility to meet a varied specifications, designers can select from several terminal configurations and lead shape options.

The high energy GDTs have been developed to help safeguard multiple market applications that have become increasingly interconnected and sensitive to potentially damaging power surges. Examples of critical designs include those that support commercial and residential IoT, industrial and renewable energy equipment.

Bourns Model GDT212E, GDT216E, GDT220E and GDT225E series two-electrode high energy GDTs are available now. They are also RoHS compliant and UL recognised.

Bourns manufactures and supplies position and speed sensors, circuit protection solutions, magnetic components, microelectronic modules, panel controls and resistive products.

The company is headquartered in Riverside, California, USA, and serves a broad range of markets, including automotive, industrial, consumer, communications, medical (low/medium risk) and audio market segments.
