40V eGaN FET meets high power density of USB-C battery chargers

Suitable for USB-C battery chargers and thin point of load (PoL) converters, the EPC2055 is the latest 40V, 3milliOhm eGaN FET from Efficient Power Conversion (EPC).

According to the company, the EPC2055 is smaller, more efficient, and more reliable than currently available devices for high performance, space-constrained applications.

The EPC2055 can be used in applications with demanding requirements for performance in space-constrained projects, such as USB-C battery chargers and thin PoL converters, as well as where fast-switching speeds and high efficiency are required, for example, LED lighting, 12 to 24V input motor drivers and lidar systems for robotics, drones, and autonomous cars.

EPC’s co-founder and CEO, Alex Lidow, says this latest introduction is an example of the rapid evolution of the company’s GaN FET technology. “This 40V device offers both smaller size and reduced parasitics compared with previous generation 40V GaN FETs,” he said. He added that it is also at a lower cost to offer designers improved performance and cost savings.

EPC also offers the EPC90132 development board. This 40V maximum device voltage, 25A maximum output current, half bridge with onboard gate drives, features the EPC2055 eGaN FETs. The 2.0 x 2.0-inch (50.8 x 50.8mm) board is designed for optimal switching performance and contains all critical components to evaluate the EPC2055.

Both the EPC2055 and EPC90132 are available to order from EPC’s distributor, Digi-Key.

EPC provides enhancement-mode GaN-based power management devices. EPC was the first to introduce eGaN on silicon (eGaN) FETs to replace power MOSFETs in DC/DC converters, wireless power transfer, envelope tracking, RF transmission, power inverters, remote sensing technology (lidar), and class-D audio amplifiers. The company says its eGaN technology delivers device performance many times greater than the best silicon power MOSFETs.

EPC also has a growing portfolio of eGaN-based ICs that provide even greater space, energy, and cost efficiency.
