Abaco upgrades 3U VPX FPGA boards for SOSA standards

Increasing bandwidth and processing capabilities at lower power and size, the VP831 is the latest 3U VPX FPGA board from Abaco Systems. Introduced to offer customers an upgrade path from the VP881, it is aligned with the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) technical standard.

It has 100G Ethernet and benefits from upgrades to the embedded ARM cores within the Zynq Ultrascale+ system-on-chip, which reduces power consumption, size, and cost. It also has advanced security to the forefront, says Abaco Systems. The VP831 is built to perform in the harshest of environments. It comes with a fully featured open-board support package giving customers a high-level reference design example to simplify integration of application specific IP and reduce risks of a program integration.

By adhering to industry standards, users can upgrade their systems without a full system redesign, including future technology not yet available on the market, according to Abaco Systems.

Serving as a SOSA standard aligned variant of the VP889, the VP831 is claimed to be the most capable embedded FPGA computing solution in a 3U VPX form factor. It combines flexible, powerful, rugged sensor processing and I/O technology for military and aerospace, and commercial programs which require the latest in I/O and signal processing technology at an affordable cost and with predictable timelines. The FPGA chipset, configurable serial interface options and embedded multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC) on the VP831 demonstrates Abaco’s commitment to rugged COTS hardware for demanding application challenges.

Pete Thompson, vice president of product management for Abaco Systems, commented: “The VP831 . . . will be beneficial in a wide range of military/aerospace and commercial applications such as communications, sensor processing, radar, and electronic warfare just to name a few”.

Abaco Systems specialises in open architecture computing and electronic systems for aerospace, defence, and industrial applications. The company creates modular solutions based on open standards with an emphasis on price/performance, rugged reliability and minimal SWaP.
