Automotive LED driver supports multiple topologies

Serving many automotive applications, Taiwan Semiconductor’s TS19501 LED driver is an AEC-Q100-qualified, single channel, dimmable LED driver. It handles a wide input voltage range of 4.2 to 42V.

The TS19501 targets high-brightness automotive applications. Its integrated design means that a single IC can be used in “virtually every automotive LED application” says the company.

Crucially it supports multiple topologies, i.e. boost, buck-boost and single ended primary inductive converter (SEPIC topologies. It also supports multiple operating modes – continuous conduction mode (CCM), discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and boundary conduction mode (BCM).

Applications include high and low beam headlights, daytime running lights, turn indicators, position indicator lights, fog lights; all terrain vehicles (ATVs) and four-wheel drive high-brightness lamps. There is also a version intended for a range of non-automotive DC-input LED lighting applications.

In addition to the wide input voltage range, the TS19501 has a wide operating temperature range of -40 to +125 degrees C. It also has low side current sensing and a spread spectrum clock to lower EMI/RFI and facilitate regulatory compliance.

Other features are pulse width modulation and analogue dimming, operation with microcontroller or analogue circuits, an adjustable frequency of 70 to 700kHz and is available in an MSOP-10EP package. According to Taiwan Semiconductor, highly integrated LED drivers save assembly time and cost while providing designers maximum design flexibility as electrification continues. While the TS19501 is not the first driver to address this growing sector, Taiwan Semiconductor believes it provides designers with more flexibility, lower pin count and typically lower external parts count than competing devices.

Samples are in stock now from authorised distributors, Digi-Key and Mouser.

Taiwan Semiconductor has over 40 years’ experience in discrete power rectifiers. Its expanded product portfolio includes trench Schottky’s, MOSFETs, power transistors, LED driver ICs, analogue ICs and ESD protection devices.

The company has production facilities in China and Taiwan which comply with current automotive and environmental standards such as IATF16949, ISO9001 and ISO14001.

Taiwan Semiconductor products are used in a vast array of applications in the electronics industry including automotive, computer, consumer, industrial, telecom and photovoltaic. Through strategic expansion of innovative manufacturing capabilities and its focus on pioneering efficient semiconductor solutions, TSC is the right choice for a successful and lasting business relationship.
