GradConn introduces connector calculator to cut design time

Customers can select the appropriate board-to-board connectors using GradConn’s board-to-board parallel stacking calculator.

Finding the right connectors for a board stacking application can be time consuming, explains GradConn. It can also be a struggle to work out which connectors are mating pairs, which stacking heights are possible and if they are available in the mounting style needed. The design can be compromised by using connectors because they can be sourced, rather than the ideal combination, in the heights needed. Designers can waste time searching for a product which could be spent working on the design, it adds.

GradConn has a solution. It has a web-based parallel stacking calculator which allows the user to selectr products to meet requirements within the company’s range of signal and power board to board connectors.

According to GradConn, the parallel stacking calculator allows customers to select products that match a requirement efficiently. The intuitive, comprehensive navigation tool rapidly identifies an optimal solution and best price, says the company.

Once the best stack height for the application has been calculated, it is simply a case of entering the information into the tool. The calculator lets the user input this stack height with tolerances, as well as the PCB connector pitch, number of rows and mounting types.

All combinations of mounting technology are covered, including through hole, surface mount and elevated options for both header and socket. The search encompasses boxed and polarised parts.

While entering dimensions, it is possible to toggle between imperial and metric units. The ‘narrow your search’ facility allows multiple choices allowing the user to compare and contrast suggested options. The search automatically displays results 0.5mm (0.02-inch) either side of the desired PCB stack height. These can be adjusted for both upper and lower tolerance, so that the alternative options can be viewed.

By clicking on any of the options offered a drawing of the part is opened, showing how to use the part number to specify more detailed parameters. The drawings also cover electrical and environmental ratings and provide mechanical dimension information.

Once the PCB mating option has been identified, add both halves of the connector can be added to the shopping basket.

Samples can be ordered via the website. In addition, it is possible to download 3D models of connectors, to evaluate their dimensional characteristics. Customers can submit a request for a 3D model drawing meeting exact requirements, for example 15-way rather than 10-way, or a change in pin length. Once this is validated by GradConn’s sales team, the technical product group produces and delivers the model within a two working days
