High frequency SM chip terminations save space, says Smiths Interconnect

High frequency surface mount chip terminations make up the CTX SMT series from Smiths Interconnect. They provide a wider coverage than traditional components, says the company, with optimised return loss.

The CTX SMT series offers broadband performance up to 67GHz, allowing for wider coverage than traditional components, says Smiths Interconnect, and optimised return loss across the frequency band. Its patented layout provides substantial power handling in a small, lightweight package, up to 1W CW of input power, due to its thermal paths.

According to Paul Harris, vice president of sales and marketing at Smiths Interconnect, the terminations can reduced footprint by as much as a factor of four. He adds that the capability to produce in high volumes to support customers’ quick ramp-up programmes, distinguishes the terminations in today’s marketplace.

According to the company, the use of total thin film technology offers tighter mechanical tolerances for better control of the RF performance.

Completed qualification tests include thermal shock, burn, RF over temperature, low temperature operation, high temperature exposure, peak power, and solder mount integrity, to ensure long term reliability in critical applications. Smiths Interconnect reports that the results have confirmed that CTX SMT design and RF performance support RF and microwave applications in defence, space, aerospace and 5G broadband markets. Qualification testing is per MIL-PRF-55342.

The CTX SMT series offer VSWR performance of 1.25:1 typical (1.50:1 maximum) and a DC frequency rating to 67GHz with optimised return loss.

The terminations are packaged in a small 0603 package yet have a power rating of up to 1W CW.

The terminations use environmentally-friendly materials compliant to RoHS standards.

Smiths Interconnect provides technically differentiated electronic components, subsystems, microwave and radio frequency products that connect, protect and control critical applications in the commercial aviation, defence, space, medical, rail, semiconductor test, and industrial market segments.

Smiths Interconnect is part of Smiths Group, which specialises in technologies for markets in threat and contraband detection, energy, medical devices, communications and engineered components.
