High-speed comms photocouplers operate from a 2.2V supply

Claimed to be the industry’s first high-speed communications photocouplers that can operate with a supply voltage as low as 2.2V, the TLP2312 and TLP2372 can be used in a wide range of applications including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), measurement and control equipment and any other equipment requiring a high-speed digital interface, says Toshiba.

Typical data transfer rates are 5Mbits per second (TLP2312) and 20Mbits per second (TLP2372). Both are specifically designed to operate with low voltage rails, down to 2.2V. This allows them to work with the lower voltages used by many peripheral circuits, including those found in 2.5V LVCMOS, while also accommodating voltages up to 5.5V. According to Toshiba, their use eliminates the need for a separate power supply rail to drive the photocouplers, which reduces component count and saves space.

Threshold input current is just 1.6mA (maximum), and supply current is only 0.5mA (maximum) across the -40 to +125 degrees C operating temperature range. These parameters allow the photocouplers to be directly driven by microcontrollers, which  reduces power consumption. Both devices offer an isolation voltage of 3.75kVrms for safety isolation.

The TLP2312 and TLP2372 photocouplers are housed in five-pin SO6 package which is particularly suitable for height constrained applications, with a maximum height of 2.3mm.

Both photocouplers are shipping now.
