Imagination and Synopsys to accelerate 3D visualisation

Graphics processor developer, Imagination Technologies, is collaborating with EDA provider, Synopsys, to create a faster, more efficient design process for mobile ray tracing. Ray tracing technology improves graphics realism by imitating how light behaves in the real world. It enables developers to create 3D scenes that are near indistinguishable from real life, said Imagination.

Mutual customers can use the Synopsys Fusion QuickStart implementation kits (QIKs) to accelerate end-to-end chip design and achieve the best power, performance and area (PPA) for the IMG CXT GPU. Imagination used the Synopsys Fusion QIKs to achieve the target performance on 5nm process technology, using seven partitions and a hierarchical flow designed with the Synopsys Fusion Compiler and Synopsys Design Space Optimization (DSO.ai) tools.

The Synopsys Fusion Compiler RTL-to-GDSII design product and Synopsys DSO.ai in the QIK autonomously explore multiple design spaces to enhance PPA metrics.

Designers can additionally integrate Synopsys RTL Architect into the flow to pinpoint bottlenecks in the RTL source code. The fast, multi-dimensional implementation prediction engine anticipates the PPA and congestion impact of RTL changes downstream, addressing them before RTL handoff.

Sanjay Bali, vice president of Strategy and Product Management, at Synopsys, said: “Achieving aggressive PPA goals for advanced processors targeting highly immersive mobile experiences, such as Imagination’s CXT GPU, requires a huge engineering effort”. He added that the companies worked closely to help customers reduce design iterations and “dramatically accelerate time to market with an optimised EDA design methodology” for SoC designs.

For Trina Watt, vice president of Product Marketing, Imagination, the collaboration on the Synopsys Fusion QIKs for CXT GPU cores “helps ensure our mutual customers have access to advanced mobile ray tracing, with enhanced performance and efficiency for next-generation technologies”.

The IMG CXT features the PowerVR Photon architecture, bringing desktop-quality ray-traced visuals to applications ranging from mobile to desktop and data centre. The Synopsys Fusion QIKs for the IMG CXT GPU are available today by request through Synopsys SolvNetPlus online support.
