Middle stroke switch is for automotive use

Alps Alpine adds 5N operating force model to its SKSU series compact, middle-stroke Tact Switch range. It is suitable for automotive use.

Input switches are increasingly integrated into the steering wheel area for drivers to operate without taking their eyes off the road. Placing driving automation controls at drivers’ fingertips is also increasing with Level 2 and Level 3 automated driving, says Alps Alpine.

Manufacturers are requesting customised human machine interfaces (HMIs) which requires a diverse selection of switches for automotive use, continues the company.

The SKSUBBE010 is the latest model in the SKSU series of compact and quiet Tact Switch products. It has a 1.04mm travel, at the longer end of the middle stroke range, and a relatively heavy 5N operating force. These characteristics enhance clarity to prevent accidental operation, and also impart a ‘premium’ operating feel. The SKSUBBE010 also incorporates a pre-stroke design, a feature already used in existing automotive Tact Switch products to prevent rattling (caused by parts making contact with one another when vibrations are applied to the product) when integrated into the end product.

The SKSU series has mounting compatibility with the existing SKTQ series and can replace the earlier model without modifying board design.

Alps Alpine has developed and manufactured around 30 main types of Tact Switch for automotive use. This latest addition can offers IP67-equivalent dust and water resistance. In addition to steering wheel area and onboard units for centre console panels, they can be used in car audio, navigation and other systems

Mass production begins in April 2020.

Alps Alpine was formed in January 1, 2019, when Alps Electric and Alpine Electronics integrated their businesses. The company targets the automotive, mobile devices and consumer electronics markets, as well as new sectors such as energy, healthcare and industry.
