Optical-to-electrical converter by Keysight extends to Infiniium real-time oscilloscope

To characterise high speed optical signals in system level testing and debugging, Keysight Technologies now offers the N7005A optical-to-electrical converter for use with its Infiniium UXR-series of high performance real-time oscilloscopes.  The converter provides real-time analysis and debug capabilities on up to four channels simultaneously, offering designers new testing methodologies, says Keysight.

As demand for IoT-based applications, HD streaming, cloud services and 5G increases, the need for higher data throughput communication and more efficient test solutions in the optical domain steadily grows as well, relates Keysight. The natural progression is that 400G with PAM4 signalling is more complicated than 100G with non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulation. This significantly increases the required time for design validation, debug and troubleshooting cycles.

Keysight’s real-time, oscilloscope-based optical measurement tools address these measurement challenges and can also be used to debug and troubleshoot an optical product design. Typically this done in the R&D design phase.

The N7005A offers up to 60GHz of optical measurement performance (O/E) and when used in conjunction with the 70GHz Infiniium UXR oscilloscope, offers end-to-end debugging capabilities that reduce the time needed to debug, while simplifying overall workflow results.  It also enables engineers to take advantage of the PAM4 optical measurement and deep analysis capabilities such as transmitter and dispersion eye closure quaternary (TDECQ) measurement provided by the new FlexDCA sampling oscilloscope software feature, called FlexRT.

The N7005A delivers a low-level of noise for 56GBaud optical PAM4 measurements and each N7005A O/E converter contains a measured frequency response data for an optimised correction filter. This frequency response data is used to flatten the frequency response for a more accurate measurement.

Keysight’s new N7005A optical-to-electrical converter is available now.

Keysight Technologies provides solutions to optimise networks and bring electronic products to market faster and at a lower cost with offerings from design simulation, to prototype validation, to manufacturing test, to optimisation in networks and cloud environments. Customers operate in worldwide communications ecosystem, aerospace and defence, automotive, energy, semiconductor and general electronics end markets.
