Silicon Labs enhances Simplicity Studio 5 to support Secure Vault

Described as a major upgrade to its software suite, Simplicity Studio 5 is the latest version of Silicon Labs’ integrated developer environment (IDE). It offers access across a range of wireless protocols, within a central web-style user interface.

The latest release of this all-in-one software suite simplifies the development of wireless system on chips (SoCs) and modules, microcontrollers, and other embedded products for IoT devices, says Silicon Labs. Simplicity Studio 5 also provides IoT device developers with the same access, security configuration, and code portability across IoT SoCs and modules, which is claimed to significantly reduce device development time.

Simplicity Studio 5 is a free of charge development platform that addresses these pain points to create smart home, commercial, consumer, and industrial applications quickly and easily. It is described as a unification point for all of Silicon Labs’ wireless technologies, and helps developers create sophisticated, flexible, multi protocol products with OpenThread and Bluetooth Dynamic Multi protocol technologies without having to know every implementation detail, says Silicon Labs.

Silicon Labs re-engineered Simplicity Studio with a modern user interface, optimised workflows, improved performance and debug and analysis capability. Simplicity Studio 5 is also designed to intelligently recognise all evaluation and development kits released by Silicon Labs and then make appropriate software development kits (SDKs), tools and development resources readily available to the user.

There is support for OpenThread, making it simpler to develop IPv6 based mesh applications and paving the way for future development of project connected home over IP-based devices running on Silicon Labs’ EFR32 Wireless Gecko.

The platform is based on the latest versions of the C/C++ development tooling and the open source Eclipse platform, enabling use of Eclipse Marketplace plug-ins.

A network analyser simplifies development of mesh network solutions by collating results across the network. There are also new project tools enabled through software component-based SDKs with add enhanced levels of software component discoverability, configurability, and dependency management.

The Power Profiler analyses full power consumption in a device to optimise design and extend battery life. The Advanced Security feature enables Secure Vault features to help future-proof IoT devices against escalating threats and regulatory requirements.

There is also automatic board detection which automatically locates device-specific technical documentation and software examples once the board is connected.

The IDE also includes code-correlated energy profiling, wireless network analysis, and improved debugging to speed time to market.

The Simplicity Studio 5 is available for download by Windows, Mac or Linux installers.
