Würth Elektronik partners with Wirepas for IoT radio modules

Entering a partnership with Finnish software developer, Wirepas, Würth Elektronik says it will deliver a portfolio of radio modules that use the IoT network protocol, Wirepas Mesh, from 2021. The modules can be used to create large IoT networks, for example of battery-powered sensors, in which each participant also functions as a router.

The Wirepas Mesh stack is self-healing and scalable. Würth Elektronik is offering its customers an “early bird offer” to receive the proven Proteus III / Thyone I hardware with firmware from Wirepas.

The Wirepas Mesh software stack was designed for reliable, scalable, long battery life operation. from Wirepas were geared from the beginning to the requirements of the industry with regards to reliability, scalability and longevity of devices in battery operation. Würth Elektronik provides compact and energy-saving radio modules which operate in the 2.4GHz band.

Commenting on the partnership, Luca Settembre, product manager for GNSS and Wirepas in the Wireless Connectivity & Sensors Division at Würth Elektronik eiSos, said: “This will make us a one-stop shop for companies willing to develop IoT solutions for remote monitoring and remote control of devices based on the extremely flexible and scalable Wirepas technology.”

He believes that companies and developers are waiting for Wirepas radio modules in smaller numbers. “We have decided to be very flexible and offer a solution before the official start,” added Settembre.

With immediate effect, Würth Elektronik customers can receive their first radio module with Wirepas basic firmware. In co-operation with Wirepas, Würth Elektronik offers standard hardware in which the Wirepas firmware can be customised according to customer requirements. An intelligent mesh network can be implemented within a very short time.

The hardware is based on the Nordic Semiconductor chipset, nRF52840, which has already been used by Würth Elektronik as the Bluetooth LE 5.1 module Proteus-III and the 2.4GHz proprietary radio module Thyone-I.

A standard radio module will be available from stock without a minimum order quantity from the end of Q1 2021.
